Ibogaine in Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions

Is ibogaine legal in Mexico?

Ibogaine is unscheduled in Mexico. It is not listed under Article 245 of the Ley General de Salud, which is why clinics can operate openly. That is different from being approved: COFEPRIS, the Mexican health regulator, has not endorsed ibogaine as a medicine. In the United States it remains a Schedule I controlled substance.

How much does ibogaine treatment cost in Mexico?

Published prices in July 2026 run from about $3,500 for short wellness-style programs to $30,000 for extended medical detox programs. Most standard 7-day detox programs fall between $7,500 and $15,500. Around half of the clinics we track publish no pricing at all; see our cost guide for the full comparison table.

Is ibogaine dangerous?

Ibogaine carries a real cardiac risk. It blocks the hERG potassium channel, which prolongs the QT interval and can trigger a dangerous arrhythmia called torsades de pointes. At least 33 deaths have been reported in the scientific literature, most in settings without cardiac monitoring or life support. This is why pre-treatment EKG screening and continuous monitoring matter more than any amenity a clinic advertises.

What screening should a clinic require before ibogaine?

At minimum: a 12-lead EKG reviewed for QT interval, bloodwork including electrolytes and liver function, and a psychiatric and medication history. Reputable clinics refuse patients with certain cardiac conditions. If a clinic will take you without an EKG, treat that as a disqualifying red flag.

What is ibogaine used for?

Most patients travel to Mexico for opioid detox, because ibogaine is reported to sharply reduce acute withdrawal. Clinics also treat alcohol and stimulant dependence, and a growing number of veterans seek it for PTSD and traumatic brain injury after a 2024 Stanford Medicine study reported large symptom reductions in an open-label veteran cohort. Efficacy evidence is still early and mostly uncontrolled.

Why is ibogaine illegal in the US?

Ibogaine has been listed on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act since the hallucinogen scheduling of the early 1970s, meaning US law treats it as having no accepted medical use. That is now being revisited: Texas created a $50 million fund in 2025 to run FDA-track clinical trials, and several states have introduced ibogaine research bills.

How long does ibogaine treatment take?

The acute experience lasts roughly 24 to 36 hours. Clinical programs typically run 5 to 14 days to allow for screening, stabilization and recovery, and longer programs of 21 to 30 days exist for methadone and Suboxone cases, which are harder detoxes.

Can I do ibogaine for fentanyl or methadone detox?

Several clinics specialize in fentanyl and long-acting opioid detox, but these are the highest-risk cases and usually require longer stays and a pre-treatment stabilization period. Expect 12 to 30 day programs and stricter screening.

What happens if something goes wrong medically?

That depends entirely on the clinic. The GITA clinical guidelines recommend ACLS-trained staff, continuous cardiac monitoring during dosing, and proximity to emergency care. Almost no Mexican clinic publishes its hospital distance. Ask directly: who on staff is ACLS certified, what monitoring runs during dosing, and how far is the nearest 24-hour hospital.

Are ibogaine clinic reviews trustworthy?

Be careful. Several operators host their own review pages, and at least one prominent operator has a documented history of review manipulation. Weight platform-verified reviews (Google, Recovery.com, PlacidWay) over testimonials on a clinic’s own site, and search the clinic name together with the word complaint before booking.

Do ibogaine clinics in Mexico take insurance?

No. Every clinic we track is private pay. Some offer financing, veteran discounts or group rates. US insurance does not cover a Schedule I substance administered abroad.

How do we verify the clinics in this directory?

We check each clinic’s website and status, published pricing, safety protocol claims, staff credentials, review record across independent platforms, and complaint history. Each profile shows a safety-transparency scorecard based on the 2016 GITA clinical guidelines. We do not accept payment for inclusion, and clinics with serious unresolved complaint patterns are excluded outright.
