Ibogaine Treatment in Washington: Where the Law Stands in 2026

There is no legal ibogaine treatment in Washington. Ibogaine is a Schedule I controlled substance under federal law, and no Washington clinic can administer it. The state's one pending bill is notable for an unusually candid reason: it would fund university research on ibogaine by studying patients treated at a licensed clinic in Mexico, an official acknowledgment of where treatment actually happens.

SB 5204: studying Mexico from Olympia

Senate Bill 5204, introduced in January 2025 by Senators Salomon and Trudeau, would authorize and fund a University of Washington study of ibogaine-assisted therapy for opioid use disorder: a three-year prospective, randomized cohort study of adults treated at a licensed clinic in Mexico. The Senate Health and Long-Term Care Committee held a public hearing in February 2025, and the bill was reintroduced and retained at the start of the 2026 session, where it still sits in committee.

Even if it passes, SB 5204 funds research about treatment abroad; it creates no legal treatment in Washington. Possession and administration remain crimes, and the state's psilocybin and decriminalization debates have not extended to ibogaine access.
